Return to sender

If you were to get divorced or separated, would you return an heirloom given to you by your ex-husband's mother, that she had given to you during your enagagement?

Yes. Of course.

I did. And then it was given back to me (his grandmother's China).

But it also depends on how long you were married, and if you had children. It also matters if the x-MIL is ill or estranged...

I think most people know the right thing to do in their hearts.

My girlfriend kept the jewelry and other things she was given. But she let her x-mother in law know she would be handing it down to her daughters (her x-mil's granddaughters). In fact, she and her x-MIL are friends to this day.

i think it's weird to return the stuff that was given to you after a divorce simply because at the time it was given to you, it was given to you in good faith and sincerely...anyways, I would hand it down to my children or something...

my ex-bf which i dated for sometime MAAANNNY years ago got so upset that we broke up that he sent a big bag of the stuff I gave him to me (I was the one who broke up with him in the first place) - but it felt so weird though..receiving all the stuff back...I gave them all away or threw it away..LOL

It belongs in the family.

There are no hard and fast rules, but Elizabeth's advice rings true: go with what your heart says.

I have thankfully never had to deal with it.

I probably would, but every situation is unique.

Depends.
If there were no children involved, if it was of little financial value but great personal value to her - then in a shot.

If it was a nasty divorce, then: no way in hell.

Yes, I think I would, especially since it came from my potential mom-in-law and not my exfiance. That's a great question, I sat and thought about it for a while.

Hi everyone. It appears that it is pretty much unanimous - give it back. Only problem now is what if the divorcing party gets back together?! Then what?
